change object text in source module automatically changes in another module

Hi,

I am trying to accomplish an auto update dxl script. Right now I am using the "brute force" method which is very inefficient. I have a module I am using as a source (think of as a template) if I change object text in the source module I want the object text to automatically change in the modules that are linked to the source module, but I only want the changes to be updated, not replacing everything in each individual module. For example: if I have certain specs that change, I would change them in the object text of the source module and they would automatically change in each linked module. Right now I am using the built in DXL library scripts to copy and delete all objects, object text, and attributes from module to module.

I hope that was clear, any advice on how to accomplish this would be a great help! I was thinking of scanning the source module for object text changes and using a trigger to update the other modules with any object text changes found in the source module but this seems like it could get complicated fast. Thanks!

Taking another look it looks like it may be possible to use Link->Advanced->Links by Attribute. However when I try this I set the source module, the target module, select object text and I had previously created a link between the object text between both modules I was interested in linking and therefore I select the DOORS LINKS for the link module option which is in the same folder as the source and target module. However I get the error:

CRCRD5079C: Could not find object "the name of the object text I am trying to link" in target module
Quit?

I don't understand how it cannot find it if I made a link previously and the link module that DOORS created is in the same folder as the two modules.

Thanks in advance.

You will need to be able to associate each target objects with WHICH controlling SOURCE object.
[1] link the target-text object to the source-text object
[2] Have some attribute in the Target module, which states which Source object controlls its text. Lets say you choose "Object Identifier"
[3] Suspect Links
[4] Attr DXL

[1] lets say use link module "SameTextLinks"
[1a] You can manually make the link
[1b] you can specify attribute in Target containing the AbsNo of the source. This basically looks like option [2]. Link-By-Attribute uses Absolute Numbers only

When you run your update script, start with the Source-Text module, and for every incoming link in link module "SameTextLinks" follow the link and update that object.

[2] When you run your script, open up every target-text module, look in the attribute for the reference value, search for that ObjID in the Source module, and if found update the text.

[3] Do linking as per [1]. Each Target spec owner would do Suspect Link analysis and update their module as needed

[4] Do linking as per [1]. An Attr-DXL could easily display the Source text, although not in Object Text.

Your error seems to be because you put that long string into some obj-attr value; when LinkByAttribute requires just Absolute Numbers.

Hello,

Sorry to reopen the topic after 3 years!.

I have the same request , to keep updating target modules as and when source modules updated. I tried to search for "DXL library scripts to copy and delete all objects, object text, and attributes from module to module" in library in doors9.5 however no success. Could you please tell how can I reach to this code?

I have to update whenever source module's "Object Text", "Object heading", "Change status" attributes changes these should be reflecting in target modules also based on incoming links.

Kindly support.

Regards,

J.Pana

If your intent is to update Object Text in a target module based on changes in Object Text in a source module -- I think you are taking the difficult course of action.

If this is not one of your goals, then it is unclear what you are trying to do.  i.e., paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 of your posting seem to conflict with each other.

Have you looked into if a traceability view built with Analysis Wizard does what you want to achieve?

Hello,

Well the analysis wizard show the summary of the change however it will not replace the updated text or the status. I would to update the "Object Text", "Object heading", "Change status" attributes in the target module as the source file.

Don't do that

Hello,

Could you please suggest me the better idea? I think this might be the common process(exchanging data between target and source through links) used across the projects but I am not clear how to do this.

Looking for your kind support!

DOORS provides you the analysis wizard -- why are you trying to make it more complex than that.
